Processor Information and CPU Identification

Everything on this page applies to Microsoft Windows PCs and uses free CPUID software: CPU-Z for CPU information and HWMonitor for hardware monitoring.

Processor identification answers a simple question: which CPU do I actually have? On Windows the answer comes from CPUID CPU-Z, which reads the processor's own identification data instead of guessing from a driver name.

What CPU-Z identifies

  • Processor name, number and code name.
  • Socket and package, useful before a CPU upgrade.
  • Family, model, stepping and revision.
  • Supported instruction sets.
  • Core and thread count, cache levels.

Identify your processor in three steps

  1. Install CPU-Z from the CPU-Z download page.
  2. Open the CPU tab and note the name, code name and stepping.
  3. Use the Tools > Save Report menu if you need to share the details.
